Cytokines in Vertebrate Reproduction

چکیده
—Mechanisms determining survival and growth of the semi-allogeneic fetus in the maternal uterus are still not completely defined. Studies in mammals have shown that soluble substances with autocrine/paracrine action (cytokines) have a central role in the maternal-fetal immunotolerance, thus, contributing to the expansion of fetal tissues in the maternal uterus. We report here about a methodological approach based on analysis of cytokines in reproductive tissues of vertebrates using different reproductive strategies, i.e., placental and aplacental viviparity and oviparity. Most of the studies focused on Interleukin-1 (IL-1), an evolutionarily conserved cytokine with many roles in mammalian reproduction, particularly in uterine receptivity and blastocyst implantation. The presence of IL-1, mainly IL-1β and of its functional membrane receptor IL-1 receptor type I (IL-1R tI) in reproductive tissues of oviparous and viviparous species, suggests that this cytokine is a fundamental mediator of maternal-fetal immunotolerance.

The role of cytokines and growth factor on reproduction is a rapidly growing new area of investigation. Immune cells and related cytokines have been shown to affect the neuroendocrine events of reproduction, ovarian function, placenta and the developing embryo. Further more, it is now becomming apparent that these relationships are reciprocal in that the different cellular components of the neu...
متن کاملAn Unusual Case of Subglossal Hirudiniasis in an Iranian Cross-breed Goat-kid
Case Description- Hirudiniasis in the subglossal area is very rare. We describe an Iranian cross-breed goat-kid with two leeches’ infestation in his sublingual area. Clinical Findings -The animal was referred to the veterinary clinic with a history of anorexia, teeth grinding and bleeding from the mouth. In clinical examination of the mouth, two leeches observed which attached to sublingual re...
متن کاملDiversification of Cytokines Across Vertebrate Immune System Evolution, Reproductive Efficacy and Tumor Escape
Cytokines have been identified and studied extensively in mammals, but little is known about their presence in other vertebrate groups. Although the divergence of cytokine subfamilies began before the fish-tetrapod split, much of the divergence within the subfamilies took place separately in different vertebrate groups. Many cytokines and their receptors, like most molecules of the immune syste...
متن کاملHormonally active phytochemicals and vertebrate evolution
Living plants produce a diversity of chemicals that share structural and functional properties with vertebrate hormones. Wildlife species interact with these chemicals either through consumption of plant materials or aquatic exposure. Accumulating evidence shows that exposure to these hormonally active phytochemicals (HAPs) often has consequences for behavior, physiology, and fecundity. These f...
متن کاملRegulation of seasonal reproduction in mollusks.
Understanding the physiological basis of environmental regulation of reproduction at the cellular level has been difficult or unfeasible in vertebrate species because of the highly complex and diffuse nature of vertebrate neuroendocrine systems. This is not the case with the simple nervous system of mollusks in which reproductive neuroendocrine cells are often readily identifiable in living tis...
